Strategic Recruitment Stream
This stream is for foreign nationals who have skills that are in demand in Alberta. Unlike most streams, applicants do not need a job offer to apply under this stream.
There are two categories that applicants can apply for under this stream:
- Engineering Occupations Category
- Compulsory and Optional Trades Category
Engineering Occupations Category
Applicants under this category must meet the following requirements:
- Applicants must intend to and be able to live permanently in the province of Alberta;
- Applicants must have the necessary education, training and experience as an engineer, designer or drafter;
- Applicants must be currently working for an Alberta employer or have worked for an Alberta employer sometime within the last two years (either directly or on contract);
- The applicant’s occupation in Alberta must be listed on the AINP’s Engineering Occupations List;
- Applicant must provide a “Letter of No Objection” from the Associate of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), if the applicant has engineering credentials and he or she is working in an occupation under NOC 0211, 2131, 2132, 2133, 2134, 2141, 2143, 2144, or 2145;
- A letter of objection is not necessary if the applicants can show that they are registered with APEGA as a foreign licensee or if they working in an occupation under NOC 2231, 2232, 2241 or 2253.

Compulsory and Optional Trades Category
This category is for all supervisors, foremen, and tradespeople working in a compulsory or optional trade in Alberta.
The requirements for this category are as follows:
- The applicant must be intend to live and work permanently in Alberta;
- The applicant must have an occupation that is listed as a compulsory trade or optional trade in Alberta;
- The applicant must have an Alberta Qualification Certificate in a Compulsory or Optional Trade; or a recognized Trade Certificate in a compulsory or optional trade issued by a recognized regulatory authority in Canada;
- Applicants must reside in Alberta at the time of their application and demonstrate that they have a valid work permit to work in Alberta in the trade in which he or she is certified;
- Applicant must demonstrate that they are either currently working in their trade in Alberta, or have previously worked in their trade with an Alberta employer for a duration of at least six months within the past two years;
- *Invitation Letters are no longer required as of May 1, 2012.
